We don’t often stay in hotels on the road trips, but when we do we take in all the luxuries of modern living. By that we mean we watched too much TV and chowed down on junk food. Don’t judge us, we all do it sometimes.

We checked out of our hotel in Anaheim, CA and found that our rental car had been invaded by ants. The insect invasion forced us to stop by LAX to change rental cars and we bumped into Kareem Abdul Jabbar (our first and only celebrity sighting).

Our stroll along the Santa Monica Pier was a little disappointing. We both thought it would be a magical funland, but it turns out it’s kind of gross and overrun by tacky shops.

We couldn’t visit this part of the country without heading to Hollywood where we checked out the Walk of Fame, Kodak (now Dolby) Theatre, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood sign.

Soon enough we left LA and headed to Yermo, CA. We spent the night camped out at the Barstow/Calico KOA and had a rip roaring fire (even though it was around 100 degrees out that night).

LESSONS LEARNED:

  • LA really isn’t for us – too many bad drivers (including ourselves!) and too dirty!

  • Hertz Rental will exchange a car no questions asked when you have purchased their insurance policy.

  • The Hollywood sign isn’t so easy to reach. Before you leave, research where you can park to get out and take pictures with it.
