Day 6: From Antelope Island to Yosemite National Park

In Destinations by Ramble Love

After a peaceful night tucked away on an Antelope Island, we rose to a sunrise like no other. Although we say that about pretty much every sunrise on the trip. We packed up the car, took a shower with the brine flies (seriously, they were everywhere), and set out to see the rest of the island. Spoiler alert…there are buffalo, ravenous coyotes, and scared little antelope ahead. Goodbye Salt Lake City, hello California!

We saddled up the Jetta to explore Antelope Island a bit more before we needed to head off for a long day of driving.

Our first stop that day was at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, UT (where on a clear day, you can see the curvature of the earth).

We drove, drove, and then drove some more through the great (and supremely desolate) state of Nevada via HWY-6.

Eventually that day we crossed into California and booked it to Yosemite National Park just before sunset.

We lucked out and found a campsite in the park at Yosemite Creek. We learned quickly that bears hang out in this campground so we played it safe and slept in the car.

LESSONS LEARNED:

  • Nevada is beautiful but eerily desolate…and you can make up a lot of time through this stretch of the country!
